Olight PL-Pro Valkyrie Review: How Bright Is It?

TLDR;

Have you ever been scared of the dark? Have you ever worried about home intruders or maybe just a bump in the night? Have you ever wondered if there’s a flashlight that you can attach an AR-15 to so you can light up the boogeyman? Wonder no more. The Olight PL-Pro Valkyrie is a bright idea for budget-conscious boogeyman spotters.

I was in the market for a compact, sturdy, and extremely bright tactical light for home defense use. I needed one for the Picatinny rail on the underside of my custom-built rifle.

I have been watching Guns & Gadgets on YouTube for several episodes now and Jared had been pushing OLight brand flashlights so I thought I would look into it and see what all the fuss was about. I had just completed a build for an AR-15 platform rifle with hints of bronze/metallic tan on some of the parts. The finish of the Desert Tan PL-Pro Valkyrie was perfect.

Build Quality

Overall the build of the light is extremely tough and solid. When you open up the box you realize that this is a quality item. I have owned several cheap LED flashlights that get the job done, but this one by far outpaces anything I have had in the past in terms of brightness, build quality, and features.

The finish is what you would expect from a professional powder coat or Cerakote gun finish. My light has seen a few bangs and scrapes and still looks very new.

Features

The “PL” in PL-Pro means that the original design of this light was to be used with a pistol It even comes with a Glock style rail adapter if you are inclined to use it for that. The rail adapter works with Picatinny (M1913) or Glock style rails.

The switches are bumper style buttons on either side of the right for ambidextrous use with your trigger finger. You can even set it into strobe mode by pressing both switches simultaneously.

in order to use the light effectively on the rail of a rifle, you’re going to want to use the PL-Pro Magnetic Remote Pressure Switch (sold separately). It uses the magnetic connector that is also used to charge the light. The pressure switch is then mounted conveniently on the hand-guard of the rifle for remote action of the light. The strobe feature is missing from the pressure switch, but can still be activated by pressing both switches on the light.

This thing far surpasses my expectations of brightness. My friends jokingly call it the “sun” or “spotlight” on my rifle and that’s exaggerating only slightly. At 1500 lumens, if you’ve never had a light like this before, you’re going to be impressed. The throw distance is great as well. It comes in just shy of a quarter-mile.

Hands on Experience

I took the light with me to Fredonia, TX to use at night for hunting predators and feral hogs. Getting around in the dark and searching the area for signs of hogs and coyotes was a breeze.

I have used the light a few times over the past few months to navigate my home in the dark. We’ve had some intense thunderstorms and tornadoes in the area with a few opportunities to head for the storm shelter and wait it out. I simply shine the light at the ceiling and the reflection of the white-painted ceiling fills the room with light as if the power was on.

So, How Bright Is It?

The Valkyrie PL Pro boasts 1500 lumens and a distance of 280 meters (918 ft). That’s shy of a quarter mile (closer to a fifth) and at close range it’s enough to temporarily blind you. The strobe will disorient an attacker with no problem.

When using the Valkyrie PL-Pro outside at night, it doesn’t just reach the distance claimed, but it fills everything between. Your field of vision isn’t lacking at all. There’s no tunnel-vision. The light fills all of the details well enough to make out the smallest of details easily.

I am using the PL-Pro alongside a 3x optic on my rifle and the entirety of the scope’s field of view is clear.

The Cons

Remembering to keep the charging magnet handy is a real struggle and there is no alternative charger with USB or anything like that so don’t lose the magnetic puck! You could take the batteries out and use them in a charger, but where’s the fun in that?
